Circular Economy Based Fishery for a Sustainable and Resilient Future of the Industry

A focus on the entrepreneurial vision of circular economy and zero waste policies applied to food production.

Get familiar with circular economy based strategies to handle raw material from leftovers/waste to produce different fishery products

Circular economy applied to fishery enables the optimization of the supply chain and pushes businesses forward to a more resilient and sustainable production

What is more, it is a resilient approach generating positive impact on the environment and people, as well as businesses.

Currently in fishery sector the circular economy model is not wide spread. In fact, after the processing of the catch, leftovers get disposed, following a linear production model.

This model generates an impact on the environment as well not enabling companies to exploit the full potential of the transformation process. In addition, the by-product yet not processed into further products generate a further cost to be burned by the SMEs.

Hence, sustainable fish processing based on circularity is a key to match the increased market demand. What is more, the circular economy model enables to optimize SMEs functioning costs. On the other side, the productive model relives the pressure on marine ecosystems and lower the impact of waste production.

By-products are a precious resource, both in terms of sustainability and profitability for the whole industry.

In this learning experience we aim at defining circular economy in fishery and focus on practical concepts related to circularity.

We will focus on the entrepreneurial vision of circular economy and zero waste policies applied to food production.

In other words, participants will get familiar with strategies to generate and handle raw material from leftovers/waste to produce different products, such as:

  • Diverse type of food.
  • Ingredient and food/feed supplements.
  • Biofuels and high-value chemicals.
